UT004 – Tensile testing:

Load/hold/unload

Description

A uniaxial tensile test is performed at a given crosshead speed. The specimen is loaded to a specified strain or stress level, held at the specified strain or stress level for a desired amount of time (typically a few minutes) and unloaded to zero load.  This process is repeated for the desired number of load and unload cycles at the desired strain or stress levels. Strain is measured using an extensometer (clip-on or non-contact, laser).

Example Data

Temperature Options

This test can generally be performed at any temperature between -80ºC and 280ºC.

  • CT: Cryogenic temperatures (-80ºC to 20ºC)

  • RT: Room temperature (~ 20ºC)

  • HT: High temperatures (20ºC to 280ºC)

Note: The use of the temperature chamber for high and low temperature tests limits the crosshead displacement for these tests.  Some combinations of material, temperature and specimen geometries may not be possible to complete to failure.

Strain Rates

Strain rates up to ~ 1/s are possible, depending on specimen geometry.

Applicable Standards

ASTM D638, ISO 527

Data Provided

Time, Engineering Strain, Engineering Stress, Load, Crosshead Displacement, Extensometer Measurement

Values Reported

Elastic Modulus, Yield Strength (0.2% offset)

Specimen Requirements

ASTM D638 or ISO 527 "dog-bone" geometries are preferred. Comparable non-standard dog-bone or cylindrical geometries are also possible.

Note that we request extra specimens to ensure a sufficient supply of specimens for valid testing.

Veryst can also assist in molding standard and non-standard test specimens.  Please contact us if you are interested in discussing this option.

Replicates Recommended

2-5
